I have a Fluval 304 and I want to use Filter Floss to Polish the water rather than buy a Fluval water polishing sponge. Will it work?

I use it for that purpose and it works just fine. Just like the "polisher pads" you have to keep it clean... I pop the top and either clean or replace it once a week.

Yes but it will clog fast

Well it will be at the very top of the filter and it already has 4 sponges in it so I don't expect many particles to get that high.

You'll be surprised then

One tip, don't pack it tight at all... very loose pack is all you need.... if you put a lot in there it will impede the water flow.

Filter companies sell it expensive, but you can find a 1lb bag of fiber filll that will last you over a year for under $3.

Poly-fil is a synthetic floss used in making pillows and such. I use it all the time and try to find the bio-degradable when possible. 1 bag lasts me a couple of months for all my tanks.

a good alternative is to buy a HOB filter and just fill it with floss, that way you dont have to constantly crack ur canister open.

There are a few problems with using floss in HOBs, though it can be done. It clogs fairly quickly (compared with sponge blocks and cartridges commonly used in HOBs). If not cleaned or changed regularly, it can block the flow of water through the HOB potentially causing a spill-over.

This is true. It happened to me on my Emperor 400's.
I now clean the floss or change it weekly in my 300g.
It polishes the water great. But it does not know when it's clogged.
It just keeps pumping water wherever it can put it.

I thought I read somewhere that it can also take the place of carbon,is this true.

No.
Filter floss is a mechanical media and isn't able to remove dissolved organics/tannins/hormones/phenols like carbon does. (chemical media)
