I am currently in the middle of my fishless cycle, as nitrite just showed up 2 days ago. My question is regarding the nitrite spike. I thought I had read elsewhere that you should do a water change if the Nitrite spike goes over 5ppm because this in itself might be toxic to the bacteria you are trying to grow. Is this true? I have not seen it addressed anywhere else.

Water changes aren't needed during cycles. Or at least, I never had the need to, even when my nitrites sky rocketed. It slows down the process more so than it helps, so I say you just leave it be.

No need to change the water until the cycle is over (no ammonia or nitrite) and you are ready to add fish
