I bought this a few weeks ago. It had a little piece of green fuzz that I noticed on one leaf when I got it planted. Now, the fuzz is growing and I notice a little bit of fuzz on one of the "bananas," as well as a little strip of something that looks almost like a root extending out from the base of the plant. When I bought this, it was in a tank with moss balls, so I hoped that I had a little piece of moss that I could transfer to my driftwood. But now I'm not sure I know what this is.

Looks like either hair algae, java moss, or possibly hair algae and java moss..

You should prune the dead leaf and stem off at the base of the plant..:)

To add after looking at the pix again, you need to get the "bananas" out of the substrate also, that plant doesnt look so good.

the first pic looks like hair algae and the second pic looks like hair algae with one piece of java moss.

I just bought the plants. In my experience, they never look that good when you first buy them, at least from a local chain store. That was one of the "original leaves," if you will. It has been dieing since I bought it. I have new growth coming out. My first round of banana plants were just left sitting on the substrate. They kept trying to root, but were knocked all over creation by my kuhli loaches. From what I've read, the bananas are food storage areas. When my first batch finally rooted, the bananas emptied, rotted and fell off...then my stinkin' kuhlis uprooted them and they died. Ever since, I've partially buried the bananas and have had good luck keeping them rooted and healthy. In a month or two, they should be growing and spreading nicely.

I went ahead and pinched off whatever it was and threw it away. I was hoping for some nice java moss...I've never had that before. But I'm not keen on dealing with a hair algae explosion in a five gallon tank.

By the way, is there anything smallish that eats hair algae? Something like a ghost shrimp perhaps?

Perhaps Amano shrimp? IDK for sure tho.........

Yeah, I think Amano shrimp would eat it. You can also take a tooth brush, stick it in the hair algae, and twirl it like you would with spaghetti. The hair algae clumps to the brush and removes pretty easily. This works best with larger clumps.

I removed the big clump, but there are tiny little pieces that seem to be stuck to one of the bananas. I was hoping to find some little tankdweller that would hit anything that might start to grow.
