In cleaning out the attic (fun, fun!), I found a HUGE brand new box of furnace / air conditioner cut your own size filter material. The box says it it is spun glass. Does anyone know if this would be safe to cut and use as filter media?

Not a good idea. Spun glass is very fine threads of glass tightly woven.

Lots of nice sharp glass pieces in your tank. Ouch

That is what I was thinking, but I didn't want to get rid of it and then find out I had had 36 feet of filter media!

Spun glass insulation hurts when you handle it with your bare hands too long, it's almost like having little glass splinters in your hands. I can't imagine what that would fell like to a fish who swallows one. I think it's better to leave it in the attic or in your air conditioner. ;)

That is a type of fiberglas and is not food/animal safe.

I would never use something like that without asking, but I didn't want to throw it out and later find out that I had had a life time supply of filter material and pitched it.

Hop in your wayback machine and you'd find spun glass was THE thing to use in those fancy new box filters, back in the 60's. :)
