I ordered some of this new fry food from Kens Fish (http://www.kensfish.com/kensspecialtyfood.html) to give it a test on my A. portalgrensis fry. I thought I'd post about it since it does exactly what it says; simulates baby brine shrimp. I have always had trouble getting dependable results hatching brine shrimp, so this looked like a great replacement. I ordered the 200-300 micron size and the fry seem to like them very much.

GOLDEN PEARLS:

"Golden Pearls" - A New Brine Shrimp Replacement Diet

Golden Pearls is a revolutionary new larval diet that has successfully replaced live Artemia nauplii in marine fish hatcheries in Europe. A patented processing technique (agglomeration of micro-encapsulated particles) resulting in feed particles or "clusters" that resemble raspberries (under the microscope). Golden Pearls have tiny air pockets that keep the feed particles in the water column, not on the bottom of the tank, and mimics live brine shrimp nauplii.

Ingredients: Brine shrimp, squid, shrimp and fish protein, animal protein, purified fish oils, phospholipids, astaxanthin, vitamins and protected minerals, antioxidants, and immunostimulants. These are now available in 3 sizes!

Analysis: Protein - 60%, Lipids - 8%, Ash - 15%, Moisture - 8%, Vit C - 2000 ppm, Vit E - 400 ppm, Astaxanthin - 500 ppm.

Port fry are growing like crazy on this food. Much better initial growth than other foods I've tried without the hassle of dealing with baby brine shrimp.

I have always used this....Decapsulated brine shrimp http://www.brineshrimpdirect.com/mc_images/category/image/DCP%28inset%29.jpg but will get Kens if you say its good for live bearer fry.

The nutrition of the golden pearls is much better than decapsulated brine shrimp. Even my roommate who isn't into fish has noticed the rapid growth of my port fry.

I was curious about these golden pearls. I wasn't sure if they were like decapped brine shrimp, like a dry food, or if they were actually living. How do you prepare them before feeding them to your fry, if there's any prep work at all?

No prep work at all. Just sprinkle some in the tank just like you would flake food. They are like a dry food, but because of the structure (looks like a raspberry under the microscope) they stay in the water column instead of sinking to the bottom or floating on the top. See the ingredients listed on my first post. My fry love them.

Will be adding some to my next order from Kens. I should be needing food in a week or so. Hopefully it is ok for Angel fry as my angels just spawned this morning.

Would this be good nutrition for a combo bristlenose and guppy breeding tank? I'll have some ABN LF BN fry very soon (got eggs now) and the guppies are constant of course... Be nice if one food would be good for both types of fish.

Do you think my bamboo shrimp would eat it?

For the guppies yes, the bn no. It stays in the water column, so I doubt the bn would be able to get at it consistently.

Think it would be good for the adult guppies as well. Perhaps the answer was earlier, but I've "blinked" since then (would say slept, but I haven't - just have CRS!).

Do you guys believe that this would only be good for fry, or would adults such as rainbowfish, adult guppies, and swordtails like it as well? Maybe even my cory cats and shark?

Adults and fry flourish on different types of food. Young growing fry would need more fat in their diet, as opposed to adults that would require more proteins. I'm sure the adults won't refuse the food, it'll just be "wasted" if it's not meant to be fed to them.

Hmmm, probably wouldn't be worth me getting then. I only raise BN plecos (who wouldn't get to the food), and one 10g tank of show guppies, probably not enough babies to justify the expense or the extra container of food. Right now the babies just get crushed flake and they seem to do fine. Oh well, it was worth asking about... Thanks for taking time to set me straight.
