Can someone point me in the direction of a good primer for aquarium lighting in general and DIY fixtures in particular?

I'd like to come up with some DIY lighting for a 30g and a 10g. I'm just looking for low light for now, but wouldn't object to having a fixture that allowed for the possibility of more light in the future.

I understand what "watts" and "degrees Kelvin" mean, I get it that different kinds of bulbs will produce different amounts of light (lumens) per watt and that the reflector shape matters. I'm not completely useless when it comes to building things. That said, folks throw around a lot of terms that I don't know (T5? T8? what???) and most of the resources I've found are either too general or too specific.

Once I've got a handle on things, I may come back with questions because my requirements are a bit unusual. The centerpiece of my 30g is a turtle, so at one end (over the basking area), I MUST have a heat lamp and a UVA/UVB lamp.

Muchas gracias!

I'm with you I need stuff to read.LOL I can answere one question for you though. t5 and t8 are the ddiameter of the bulb.t5 is smallest then t6 t8 t10 and t12. I think basicly the smaller the tube the more light get into the tank, because with a bigger bulb the light get blocked.
