There are far too many cichlids to choose from. IMHO, oscars are the most boring of them all. Watch this jurupari video and tell me if you still think oscars are the most interesting.

While I do see the cool factor of mouthbrooding, I think just that one little fun thing they do isn't going to out-compete Oscars for overall personality.

Oscars x2 :]

OK it's a mouthbrooder - "NEXT"! I have mouthbrooders also, just not those. So far I have to say my Oscars have won me over for personality although Dovii come in at a pretty close second.

If we're going to compare fish to dogs, I would compare an oscar to a retriever. Sure I would like one, but since everyone seems to have them, they wouldn't by my first choice. I have four tanks all devoted to cichlids and do not have an oscar. If I ever had a 200 gallon tank or bigger then I'd get an oscar.

If I decided to breed cichlids and keep one species it would be a tough call between the Polleni and Green Terror. If I had to pick one, I'd go with the Polleni for it's unique color and shape. Also, I think cichlids in general have personality. My Texas cichlid does everything I've heard Oscars do.

Seeing as I've only ever owned kribs (yep, a newbie) for cichlids, I can't really comment on anything else. But, I like kribs. They are a nice size so that they can fit in almost any tank, they are easy to breed, and they are pretty good community fish. I'd have to pick kribs, based on my slim experience.

They are colorful, fun to watch, and easy to care for. Plus, fairly easily available but few people that I know have heard of them. Yeah, I'd pick kribs. I might pick a different cichlid a few years down the road, but for now, kribs are it babe.

I've been wanting some Neolamprologus brichardi for a while now...
Gets my vote forsure. I have 1 right now in my tank had it for about 1 year and haven't seen any more since that. Would like to make a spieces tank and breed them.
2nd vote goes to severums I love there colors and temperment have 4 red shoulders in my 55 gallon.
3rd for rams. Beautiful.
4th is for discus. Although I have had no experience with them I would also love to have a tank of them.

And if I didn't/couldn't choose Fronts, I'd certainly choose
Steatocranus casuarius , the Buffalohead Cichlid.

i'm gonna cheat and pick two, since i simply cannot choose between oscar or paratilapia polleni! i have both, and although the oscar has the personality and size, the polleni is such a gorgeous fish. both recognize me and swim to the front when i come near the tank.

Gymnogeophagus rhabdotus. They don't get too big, or two nasty. The colors are great. Red and blue. Plus, they're earth eaters. It's really cool to watch them sift sand all day. Not a trait I'd care for in a woman, mind you, but, in fish, it's pretty cool.

oscar = fishdog = yawn (I'm a cat person) LOL

Haha! I feel the same way. I like my fish to be fish, and my cats to be cats... and I dont have a dog lol. (3 cats)

My fav cichlid would have to be the Victorians - Haplochromis Sp "Dayglow Fulu" (at the moment)- I have a colony of them and they are just the most amazing species to watch. Their social behaviors and hiarchy structure are intence! I have a tank with 1 dominant male, and other tank that is still fighting it out on who is the top male (2 colored-out contenters). Great to watch and see what happens day to day. :) I also love that not all of them are colorful- you have to provide good husbandry practices to get the most out of them as well. Keeping this species has driven me further into the addiction.

I've always been a big Parachromis fan. I love both my Jag and Loisellei. But my absolute favorite fish has to be my male Jag. He's such a stunning looking fish with an "in your face" attitude.

From central south America i would take a jaguar cichlid or three. They have the ability to be a pet, as well as a terrorist of the aquarium and they have looks.
