Any of you guys ever use multi-colored or same colored marbles as a substrate. The would be cool looking. I saw it illistrated ia book once, but not a real photograph. Also, has anybody used a dirt substrate. Is that possible, if sand is?

Marbles are frequently used in tanks to raise egg-scattering fish like danios. A single layer of marbles is fine, but requires frequent cleaning. I would go with a RUGF under marbles instead, to reduce the chances of waste getting trapped in them. Won't work if you're breeding though, since you don't want the eggs to get blown out.

Dirt has been used in planted tanks, in layers with a the top layer or gravel or sand. The layers can make replanting a pain though--you have to be careful not to disturb too much of the dirt. I have water logged peat in some of my tanks, and many fish like it, but is does make cleaning a bit more difficult.

Good idea, OG. Even better yet would be a RFUGF like my set up below V
