I just discovered that slate will increase your TDS by 2-3X's , I was wandering why my TDS's were higher than our holding tank water . Today I tested after I removed the slate that I used to hold up my wet, dry section and my readings went down 300, I was just over 600 and I am keeping Discus and Angels in this system.

I guess I should have known better , but I grabbed the first thing that came to mind . I have replaced it with a piece of PVC and two 90"s for feet on each side of the bin.

Live and learn

Interesting. I have a slate-bottomed tank, I've never tested water in that for TDS. I wonder if its a forever thing, or if eventually it stops releasing stuff.
