Alright, I know this is nothing to most of you, but this is my first!

I just looked into the aquarium this morning for my daily morning shrimp count, and there she was, hanging out in the floating Najas indica, shifting her eggs around!! I'm so excited!! Like I said, this is my first time.

So... I have a weather loach in there... so I'm going to take her out. I'll put her in to her own small container - the one I use for transporting fish for longer distances (say, if my LFS doesn't have what I'm looking for, or I want to get from the better place that's farther away but has nicer fish and is entirely dedicated to aquariums), with water from the tank she's in, some Najas to hang out in, air, and heat, and small daily water changes. Is there anything else she needs? Well, food, too, of course - I have sinking pellets that I'll break small pieces off of. What will the babies eat? Are they larval, or mini-adults? Does she need much light, or is a darker, quiet area ok? Like, in the cabinet under my 20H, so the cats and dogs can't get to her, either? Tomorrow morning I'll grab a gallon tank for hatching. Didn't really expect to have this occur! At least not quite yet!!

Here's a pic... albeit a blurry one. She was away from the front, and my lousy cam kept trying to focus on the najas. But here is my pregger girly shrimp with her soon to be offspring!

Supposedly there are 2 ghost types in the hobby, one that breeds in Freshwater and one that hatches into small larvae that needs saltwater.

I am unsure how to differentiate the two.

Shrimp do not need that much protection, unless there are anything big enough to eat them. But they really do not need any special preparation. Food, plants, and everything else you do in your daily routine.

As for the weather loach be careful not to put them in a that small of a container. As well as have some sort of covering, they will jump out if they dislike their surroundings.

I guess she didn't like the separation, as I found her just now on the floor I'm not sure how, as it _did_ have a cover. She's obviously dead, both she and eggs dried up. I wanna cry, but it seems silly to cry over a little aquatic bug. Then again, part of that is probably because it just caps off my otherwise atrocious day.

I put her little body in my 20H to help with my fishless cycle there.

Bummer... The shrimp shown was an American Glass Shrimp and does indeed breed in FW as DarrylR mentioned..... The red bands on antenna help in IDing them....

aw, sorry to hear :( and don't be bashful about getting excited over berried shrimp. It's always rewarding to see our critters survive and reproduce successfully!

Next time you might be better off putting the animal in a breeder trap so it can still benefit from the water of the big tank but still be protected from any meanies.

What about red bands on the "wrists"? Most, if not all, of mine have the reddish tinge on the antennae, but some have really bright red wrist bands, too. I was joking with my daughter today (before I found "the body") that the red bands were their sweat bands for when they're exercising to be fit to "outrun" the loach! Who, btw, hasn't eaten any in WEEKS. I think he got tired of them!!

I have one of the plastic floater types, but the slits in it are too big and the babies would have gotten out. I'm going to get one of the mesh ones that hook to the side. And build a roof for it, too, 'cuz the loach has proven able to get into them if there's no top!

I just feel awful. I feel like I killed her by trying to keep her and the littles safe. :(
