hey,
I've got a bunch of plants that are growing roots out of their middles.. if they were terrestrial plants, I'd say they were air roots..

the photo attached is out of focus, sorry.... but I hope you can see that the plants have roots growing out of their sides.

It is normal for stem plants to do that. You can just snip them off if they bother you. Some plants get more than others.

i just was wondering if it was indicative of a problem like lack of nutrients in the water column or something like that

It is not a problem. If you do not like the roots just pull out the plant and cut off the lower half and replant.
My Cardinalis always has lots of lower plant roots.

Not really a problem. Although in a mature tank where there is a good balance, there are far less water roots-IME.
