I am looking to ship some java moss, but have no heat packs. Is this a hardy plant to ship? or should I try to get some heat packs, or wait until the weather warms up a bit?

Shipping would be in a USPS Priority flat rate box.

Thanks.

No you better wait, it is not a very hardy plant to ship, infact most mosses fair badly with shipping even under decent conditions.

I totally disagree. I've never had a problem shipping moss. As long as the temp is not going to drop below freezing, I wouldn't bother with a heatpack. As long as the moss is kept wet / moist, it should be fine for the 2-3 days that priority takes.

I have never had issues with shipping common mosses either. I just put it in a sandwich bag. I think if you have the box well insulated, you should be fine as most packages are not left out. Make sure the person was planning on being home for delivery so the box doesn't sit outside and all should be ok.

even if there is some loss due to freezing.. you don't need much of the moss to restart again..

one problem I have with java moss.. when cleaning it up.. any loose strands seem to start a wad of moss in short order ;)

This is why I have a ton of it, I pulled a huge chunk out of my 55G. There were a few strands left, those few strands now cover my driftwood again.

I've never had a prob with java moss either. I've even had instances where I'm cleaning/trimming it up and leave it sitting out for quite a spell and then have an "oh shoot!" moment. Rinse it off and throw it in the tank...bounces back...time and time again.

Thats probably the problem I had, last two sets of plants I got the moss was damp and all brown, never got it back.

Well looks like you will be fine, I must just be unlucky.
