In my 25 gal long The water is getting darker my light is working fine i cleaned the outside, back, hood everything today and my slate, driftwood, gravel, heater, and almost all my fake plants have developed a rusty colored brownish goo is this from the leaf lettuce i feed my gouramis (boiled of course) or is it just brown stuff?
My guess is algae but a couple of Q's:
How long does it take your gouramis to eat the lettuce?
Is there any left over when they are through?
How often do you feed them?

yeah, it sounds like algae to me as well. brown, gooey algae can form on all your stuff if you have too much nutrients in the water. this is pry because you have fake plants, so there's no real plants in there (bsides algae) to use up all those nutrients. then there might be algae spores or something floating around in the water making it darker.

I give it to them once every 2 weeks or so and its gone the next day, the whole piece.it seems to just be algae, thanks for the help. I hope it clears up soon, my otos will probably get it.

funkifish, what kind of filter do you have and what is the flow from it?.. (Gallons Per Hour -- GPH)
A small part of this problem may be not enough water flow in the aquarium. Stagnant water is not good.
Do a few water changes. Daily, or every other day too.. 1/3 should be fine.

How long has this tank been setup?
How many watts is the bulb, and how old is the bulb?
My speculation is diatoms which thrive in young tanks, low light or old bulbs and such. Even in lower light levels things tend to correct themselves once they use up their energy source. Two to three otos or so in a tank that size would be capable of managing the outbreaks easily.
