its some kinda aquarium sand. yeah i know im wasting money, but hey its only 5 gal i can afford it.
its some company that sells green and blue and black and white sand and those are all huge sands, but the natural color one is extremeley fine, it felt like i was working with clay. but its very prone to algae

It's a great start.

I'd recommend putting a sponge on your intake to extend the life of your filter with sand. Sand by far was the worst substrate I worked with in a low light 55g. Sensitive plants would get root rot from compact sand and the temp in the sand was always colder because of poor circulation which I think contributed to the rot. I've seen beautiful sand planted aquariums most of the plants could root on top to the substrate and into the sand or was kept separate from planted areas which was another substrate.

Size of sand has a lot to do with results as well mine was very fine. I'm using a large size in a 20g with much better results.
