Im setting up a 22 gallon long and trying to figure out what to put in it. I
t's gonna be a cichlid tank for sure, but I cant decide what to keep in it.
Heres what I've narrowed it down to:

Festivum-1
Jack Dempsey-1
Black Belt-1
Green Terror-1

(those are the ones that I would only keep one in the tank if I bought them)

Ram, German Blue-2+

Ram, German Gold-2+

Hap. Milomo-2+

(these are the ones that I would get more than 1 of)

Thanks!

I don't have experience with many of those fish, but I think the JD and GT will get too big for that tank. I think a pair of rams would work, or you could do convicts or jewel cichlids.

I think the jd and the gt in my local store are done growing, and they are not too big atm. They have been kept in smalloer tanks for a while so I think the tanks stunted their growth.

Jack dempseys, black belts and green terrors all require at least a 55 gallon for one. Your tank is way too small. A festivum could work but I don't know a whole lot about them. I think you are way better off just sticking to the rams. The hap would also be much happier in a larger tank. I'm assuming you mean a 20 gallon long which are not even 3 feet long and these guys need space.

I have a small jd in a 55 with a medium firemouth, I can already tell that it will get cramped and either mr firemouth will need to be moved or Im just gonna need a bigger tank.

No way on the JD, Black Belt or Green Terror. None of these would make suitable fish as they all exceed 8" in length and are full bodied fish. At full size they wouldn't even be able to turn around. My dad's Black Belt was 14" at full size.

The Festivum- Maybe. I have no experience with them but at 4" they might be possible.

When you say Hap. Milomo are you referring to this fish? http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=1217
At 11" full grown it would not be suitable at all. Not to mention the rest of the fish you list are not African.
I would recommend a pair of Rams with a school of Tetras.

Festivums would do much better in a 36" tank or larger.

Rams with tetras sounds best to me.

:iagree:

Your tank allows for a single pair of rams (or apistos) at the most. No other cichlids.

no no no. Rams are a bit on the mild side and africans are rather mean.

also, id love to put the festivum in my 29, do you think it would kill any of my fish? (non bottom dwellers are dwarf gourami, angelfish, and goldfish)

A Festivum requires a minimum of a 55G IMO.

I couldn't agree more. I base this not on maximum size, but from experience... HN's female festivum OWNS his 55 gallon. ;)

wait, so you already have the gourami, angel, and goldfish in your 29?

Not only is that improperly stocked, but it's overstocked as well. No more fish.

4 feet sounds like a better minimum. :thm:

Some Sea Monkeys would work well in that tank though. :)

Sea monkeys now that's funny i don't care who you are..

I had festivums in a 120gal and they did fine there but they are a more deep bodied fish and are very timid by nature and will not survive stressful sitautions..

The 29gal would be a good setup for the angel and maybe a pair of rams..

The 20gal would be a sweet Tanganyika shellie setup only like Neolamp Multifasciatus, stay away from Mbuna in either setup as for these they get big and are rough on residents..
