I am trying to decide what to do in my 29 gallon lightly planted low light tank as far as CO2 and I am curious about seachem excel. How does it work? Is it effective? Pros and cons?

Excel does work. Even though I have pressurized Co2 on my 120g I use it to kill algae primarily on driftwood. On my low tech 20g tall I use it as the only form of carbon but sporadically so I never achieved great results. I've known of hobbyist to use it on Nano tanks with incredible results and I assume it will be more expensive dosing it on 29g.

Cons- some plants are sensitive to direct contact which I've found out the hard way. Rotala macrandra is an example of that and I avoid pouring into that area of the tank, diluting would help as well.

I used excel on a 50g heavy planted and had great results, but just like jay said dilute it. took me 3 orders of swords to figure out that the excel was dissolving them.

I used it on my 37g till it sprung a leak and used it on my 29g that I got to replace it till I ran out and it worked great. I need to order more. As far as diluting it goes just put it into the water you are adding back in after a water change thats all I did and never had a problem with it.

I'm thinking it has to do with the water chemistry. Maybe Excell can react adversely with high levels of certain minerals in the water and the plants OD? Just a guess.

Except my water is very high in TDS. If it does hurt plants in water high in mineral content then it definitely would have shown in my tanks by now. If I'm understanding you correctly...
