Loaches are fond of snails. My clown loaches ensure no snails last very long in my tanks - they're very effective.

Controlling the nutrients available for snails is more efficient. Over feeding, and not removing dead plant material are huge causes of snail outbreaks. If there isn't much leftover food, and if dead leaves are removed promptly, snails reproduction will be at a minimum. Snails are not a problem, and are useful in determining if there is a problem. I prefer my tanks to have a few snails--though it's hard to keep them around with puffers.

Many of the loaches will eat snails. For a 30G Zebras and YoYos are the most likely bets. They are community fish, so you'd want to get at least 2, preferrably 3+. (Zebes and YoYos will grow to ~4"). Both of these are peaceful bottomdwellers, and will be happiest with places to hide.

There are advantages to snails, and you can keep their population low by controlling their food source. They're not welcome in my tanks, though. ;)

You can also remove snails manually by baiting them with vegetables (hard to get 'em all), or using copper (killing any crustaceans and potentially dangerously spiking your ammonia levels).

What's wrong with puffers? I have three dwarf puffers and I love them. They're personable they always follow me, act really silly and do a great job on the snails. Also they don't bother my other fish or shrimp, they just chase each other around.

The advice on limiting food and removing dead plant material is right on the money. Another type of fish that I have had experience with in controlling a snail population are gold barbs and rosey barbs. The gold barbs eliminated any excess snails in a 30 gallon in about 2 months (and there were a lot of excess snails). This may not be quite as quick as loaches or puffers, but gold barbs tend to be a more moderate size and I've never had any compatibility issues with them. So IMO make a viable option.
