hey now,

I am thinking about putting a pair of these in a 10 gallon. I have ordered parts on the way being shipped from big als including an aquaclear200 filter. I chose the 200 because i wanted alot of aeration, and larger bacteria surface, but now I am worried that the 200 will cause way too much surface agitation for the gouramis. Will the 200 on the lowest setting be ok? Will it rip their bubble nests apart?

Do dwarf gouramis have alot of personality?

One male and One female a good idea in a 10 gallon? Maybe one male and three females?
I have just now started to research and I know they like to have their own spaces, I am still alittle fuzzy on mating rituals and if the male gets overly aggresive in wanting to always mate.

also...with gouramis do you fill the tank up to the very top?

thanks

take care,
Jared

I think that the AC 200 might be a bit much in that small of a tank. It will definately destroy any bubble nests or at the very least push them all to the corners. I use an AC 200 on my parents tank but it is a 20 gallon and the gouramis spend most of their time on the side opposite the filter output.

Make sure to get lots of plants, either real of fake, as this helps to block sight lines. Gouramis tend to get aggressive amounst themselves. I would think that 1 male and 1 female might be too little if the male is overly ready to breed. But I don't think you have enough tank space to put 4 gouramis in there. Chocolate gouramis would work but they are very fragile creatures that don't like a lot of current.

One way to combat the breaking up of a bubble nest can be to use a styrofoam cup that has been cut down to less than an inch. attatch this to something, side of tank, and that will help the nest stay in one place, and keep it from breaking up with all the water flow.

hey now,

Yeah that is what I was afraid of. My original intent was a 10 gallon for 6 cardinals and some corys. After seeing a friends tnak with cichlids, I am thinking I want fish that have alot of personality. Can anyone think of any fish that like a stronger current , fit in a 10 gallon, and have alot of personality?

thanks!

take care,
Jared

First of all, can you find females? They are virtually impossible to find...

Second, I wouldn't go with one male or one female - he would constantly harass her.

Also, four gouramis is too much for a 10g. Gouramis, especially males, are very territorial by nature.

I have two males in a ten gallon, but I got lucky in that they don't bother each other too much. But, I have a LOT of plants in that tank - as mentioned, its important that they don't see each other.

Yes, fill the tank up the same as you would with any other species (as long as you don't have some wierd kind of tank where the cover rests on the water)

I would suggest getting ONE male dwarf gourami (perhaps a neon blue - SOO pretty) and making it the centerpiece of the tank. Then adding some other compatible fish in with it. It would really highlight the gourami, plus it would add movement to the tank since gouramis don't move around all that much.
