Start with a very hardy fish. I used danios to cycle my tank and they did fine and I still have them from over a year ago! Tetras are usually hardy. Don't get anything special.

Or, cycle fishlessly and avoid the concern for a fishes health, and what to do with fish that may not be part of the plan.
