Laterite is extremely nutrient rich, but makes an awful mess, needs to be covered in gravel, can cause massive algae outbreaks, and is expensive, so I'd stay away from it.
Flourite is very good, but can cloud the water for a while - it should be rinsed first. Its multi colored (red, brown, black) and is the size of regular gravel. It can be used alone.
I prefer Shultz's Aquatic Soil (Profile). It is half the price of Flourite, is not as messy, can be found at Home Depot (ie no shipping). It is one solid terra cotta color and is smaller grained than Flourite. It can be used alone. A 10lb. bag cost me 5-6 bucks.
2-4" is best.

Flourite & Onyx sand are both good stuff.
