the pictures arent great, and i still have to clad the stand and build the hood, plus the 2 big pieces of drift wood have coloured the water slightly, and i didnt clean the water marks from the front of the tank-what a list-but i thought id post some pics of my new goldie tank anyway. in here are 4 fancy goldfish and 2 common goldfish. the smaller orange and white goldie was rescued from a 2 gallon bowl, i figure she must be one of the luckiest goldfish ever :)

I love your comets! What a gorgeous tank you have set up for them. I've tried live plants many times, but they either eat them or move them around so much while rooting in the gravel that the plants die. I may try some potted plants.... perhaps that will solve the problem. Your tank looks so nice with all those plants.
Love the pictures!

it does take a lot to keep the plants in, but i have found if i feed them 3 times a day with slightly smaller feeds instead of 2 they do tend to leave them alone, well they are for now, fingers crossed it stays that way. the 2 biggest fantails are the worst culprits, they grab a leaf and just keep pulling, and the strength the bigger fish have i find is shocking lol, i dread to think how strong something like a pacu would be!

I don't worry about them tearing up my plants. Every fish is different, so it's sort of trial and error to find out which fish are going to gobble up which plants. So if some of my plants aren't picture perfect looking.. okay, no big deal. I don't mind a few torn leaves here and there or something with the tips nipped off. I can trim that back and let the plant grow new ones. Maybe even move that plant somewhere else in the tank where it's better protected. I'm still going to keep the fish I like and do so in a tank that's full of lush greenery because I enjoy looking at it. And the fish seem to enjoy swimming between them.

Most of what I've seen is just random nibbling here and there.. which most plants will compensate for because they keep growing. Plus, once I know which plants these particular fish eat the most, that will tell me which plants I should be growing (and enjoying) elsewhere as something of a food crop for them. I think of this more as water gardening, I suppose.. where's it just a matter of separating the vegetables from the ornamentals.

As an example.. I'm sure no one with any common sense about plants is going to put a large, delicate, and very fragile Madagascar Lace Apon into a big goldfish tank. But that's exactly what I did. It needs good water movement, so I've got it up against the back wall, between the intake on one side and a spray bar on the other. In the first couple of days, some of the leaves have been damaged. But that's mostly been done by me as I've snagged it a few times while doing other things in there. And trying to get that large bulb secured down so it doesn't move around. It's been a couple of weeks now and I've not seen one goldfish nipping at it yet. So maybe they won't. There are already so many other plants they already pick at all the time, they probably won't bother this one at all.

(I need to remember to get that cana out of there, though!)

Yes I do!! But it's just temporary. Flaringshutter snuck him in when she sent me Sprocket and Alexei. LOL. I'm sure the little fiend is feasting away, too. (Now you see why it's not the goldfish that I'm worried about.)

He's really beautiful, too. I knew he was coming, but all my tanks are full of plants. I just haven't figured out where I'm going to put him yet. Iris sent me two of them, but one didn't make it. So now it's just him.. on the loose and having a grand time. :)

I wish I am near you so I can shove you some of the baby canas.:D I have literally a hundred of these. Someone was interested to put them with his goldfish. Dunno if he still is.lol He just put crayfish with them and ended up their tails clipped despite my warning.:irked: My canas can eat a bucket of plants in a day.:screwy:

Yikes. You really don't want me to have any plants, do you? lol. Talk about massive deforestation in my gold fish tank.

I actually have no idea how much he's eaten so far. I've only had them in there for a few days. Sprocket wasted no time getting cozy with my calico fantail, so I'm apparently breeding goldfish now. I thought they were just getting acquainted, but yesterday she spawned. I've collected a few hundred eggs today that I wasn't prepared for.

Canas are one of the Apple snails that get really huge. Most of the Apples won't bother plants, but Canas and Haustrums will eat everything.

This gives you an idea how big they get.

The one I just got is a baby.. it's hard to see very well in this yucky photo, but I'll attach it to show what he looks like.

Hi Kelly,

They're apple snails (Pomacea canaliculata) that grow to baseball size which is approximately 3 inches in diameter. They're invasive species in Asia and Hawaii and have already established populations in some states.

LMAO! Iris, your dear Sprocket has a new girlfriend!:banhim: Good luck with the babies, Kashta! I'm hoping to get back to goldies soon as I get my ponds merged into a large one. Not really this month but hopefully in a few months. First, msjinkzd on snails and now flaringshutter on goldies again.:lipssealedsmilie:

Canas aren't that bad.:D Only downside is they're prolific and I already threw almost 15 clutches which could have driven me to the wall with over 2k baby snails.:wall:

oh and if anyone can come up with any good names for the large calico and the large orange and white fantail, please let me know

All mine aren't named yet either, Kelly. I've had the same problem. I have another medium-sized calico fantail and a red oranda without names. :headshake2:

This fantail just paired off with Sprocket and layed eggs, so I had to give her an actual name. (Can't keep calling her the "large calico" anymore now.) So... I've decided to name her Cassandra. She's a rescue fish I got for free last summer (with two other large goldfish crammed into a 10 gallon tank).

Since we've been talking about them now.. here is Sprocket and Cassandra on the left, with a small leucistic fantail named Chiffon to the right. (Yes, I was trying to get a picture of the moss ball.. not the fish.)

Thanks, Lupin. That was an obvious name for a transparent fish with all those long fins - it was either that or Cellophane. lol. I just hope she's not really a 'he.'

She's another reason why I need a decent camera.

I like "Chiffon" better than "Cellophane" although you could reserve that name for another goldie with looks to match that name. She's such a beauty!

I forgot this one...Iris, wouldn't Java ferns and anubias work better with your goldies? At least, when attached to the woods, they won't be disturbed so often but on the other hand, you mixed the saltons, canas and haustrums so the plants may be out of the question.:perv:

Great tank! Lots of swimming space! I have real plants in my goldie tank but I planted them in a large glass bowl. They don't even attempt any plant attack, I must be feeding them too much lol. I love the 7th pic down btw! :)

ooh my lord, those snails are awesome! i want one so bad, but nowhere to keep it, lol i like my plants and they get enough hassle off the fish! but wow, what a talking point, such a pity they will nicely keep the stems clean of leaves lol. i wan tto get some snails to go in with my goldies, but they eat all the pond snails that are in there so ma unsure what type to put in, any ideas?

Thanks, Kelly. I really need a macro lens/faster shutter speed to show them off. All the pics I get are a mess. Up close, the color balance gets weird and it's not quite focused. Farther away, the fish move too fast and come out blurry.

So Chiffon isn't all yellow like that shot makes her look. She's really grown since I got her last summer. Two teenage girls were rehoming her on Craigslist who'd been keeping her in an unfiltered bowl with a betta. When I saw the length and shape of that tail in the photo they posted in their ad, I was right there to get her. They had named her Snowflake.. I later learned about leucism through this forum and went with Chiffon because she's not really white either.

This is what she looked like back then.

Get some diffusas/briggs to go in there, Kelly. Very similar appearance and they won't bother your plants. Those grow to a smaller size, somewhere between a large walnut and a golf ball.
