Do any of you with shrimp only tanks have problems with them jumping out of the tanks? Do you close off the back of your shrimp tanks or is it okay to leave open?

I have covers on mine, but I dont think a shrimp out of water can even walk or support its weight...

Most of my shrimp tanks are open tanks. None of my dwarf shrimp really escape out of the tank, although amanos have done so before.

I have had open top shrimp tanks with no issues. They don't jump.

amanos are beasts :p I don't worry about my red cherries. Had them in an open top tank for months with no wanderers

I will be getting the neocardina yellow or blue pearl. I don't want to plan the tank incorrectly. :)

You should be fine with or without a cover.

the only reason I eventually covered my tank was because of the brigs. Little troublemakers.

They will only try and climb out if the water quality is bad or if there is NO oxygen.

My shrimp never leave the substrate.. but I only have Ghosts

Personally, I'd cover just to reduce evaporation, to keep dust and debris outta the water, and mostly because I'm paranoid about things falling into the tank >.>

LOL my ghosts climbed everywhere! I even saw them riding on floating pieces of cucumber upside down or hanging upside down of floating plants. I keep amanos now and they are just the same lol.

About half my shrimp tanks are open top, about half have covers. ITs always best if you have covers for the aforementioned reasons of possible contaminants, evaporation but I haven't had any cliff-divers yet that I know of.

:iagree: My open topped tanks have faster evaporation rate than the closed ones. Only reason I closed the tanks is because of my snails.lol They are too smart and will find holes so I keep closing the gaps.:wall:

i had a bamboo that jumped once, not only did it jump, it walked out of the room and down the hall a little before it got dried up. somehow it managed to turn the corner and make it another good five feet. no lie.
on the same note, neocardinia are much smaller, i wouldnt discount them jumping though. a mostly covered hood should suffice

when my fish were tryin to eat my shrimps they jump out of the water but get stuck on the glass untill i noticed some dried up. they were just feeder ghosts..

I plan on using a cover but was mostly concerned about that opening at the back of the hood where you would normally hang a filter. I had a Betta jump out that opening on a 29 gallon.

You guys don't have shrimps climb along heater cords and escape outside of the tank?
While back, a ghost shrimp did this to me, although the water level was less than 1 inch away from the top of the tank.

I've never had a shrimp scale anything to get out. I've had Tigers, RCS, and a few Ghost varieties in open top tanks and never had one get out.
