View Full Version : "Whisper" - doesn't!

I have a whisper power filter "5". It is not new, but "appears" in good condition. Flow rate is very good, but considering the name, it is NOISEY!. I have otherwise aquaclears, powerheads, and even an ancient fluval canister which are all way way way quieter than this.

Is there anything I could look at modifying? I gave it a pretty good cleaning - there may have been slight residue left on the impeller - I will clean it again, very thoroughly. Perhaps it is worn and so the impeller rattles in the motor assembly? Are there moving parts inside the motor that could be creating the ruckus? I have a sneaky suspicion that for the cost of replacing the motor and impeller, I may as well buy a new filter....

Thanks for your thoughts,
Keegan

Power it on and off several times.

The magnet/impeller is not seating properly. I have had this happen with AquaClears too, and turning it off and on has solved the noise problem.

Post back - I'd like to know if this helped..

Thanks for the suggestion Joe,

Unfortunately, is didn't seem to work. I've scrubbed it out squeaky clean, and turned it off and on a ton of times now - and still it creates a huge ruckus. I may try a new impeller if I can find one.

I also read somewhere of people wrapping a bit of teflon tape around the impeller... though I don't know how you would get it to stay there.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks,
Keegan
