So I got a tank from a friend that was used in a SW setup. This had a hole drilled in the side which I just plugged two nights ago with silicone and two pieces of acrylic plastic.

I let it sit and was cleaning the excess silicone today before I was about to leak check it and I broke that pane on the tank.:swear: I didn't say nice things for a minute. I had lifted that side of the tank off the table a little bit and it slipped out. The pane is now cracked from top to bottom.

This is a standard 30 gallon tank and I was pondering my options in my frustration and come up with these solutions?

1. Could I silicone the cracks on the inside and silicone a 2nd plate of glass to the outside of the broken plate?

2. Could I silicone a new plate of glass to the inside of the broken plate?

3. Could I completely remove the broken pane and install a new pane of glass?

4. Should I just toss the tank because it will cost almost the same amount to buy a new one? (Haven't checked into glass prices at HD yet)

Thanks for any help ahead of time!!

At this point, I would probably just buy a new tank... you could probably find a good deal on craigslist. Seems a pretty big risk and a lot of work to re-fix it. Good luck.

He's right, buy another 29 and use the glass from the current for a cover, sump baffles, etc.

Definitely replace the tank. There would be so much frustration involved with replacing a pane of glass that it really wouldn't be worth it. And there is no way I would trust it with just patching the cracks. ;)

Definitely but a new tank. Patching with plugs and silicone is just asking for trouble IMHO.

New tank. Save the old good panes for future use.

I agree, get a new tank. I found my 29g with a stand for $40
