I hopped up to a couple of shops tonight and was looking at the fish labled GT's at a couple of spots. Most were easy to identify as the common white saum GT's, but at petsmart the tank labled GT's had smaller fish in it. One of the primary ID features that i found that was supposed to distinguish a GT from an acara was the length of the dorsal and anal fins. In the slightly older GT's at the other place, this was readily apparant, but in the younger tank at petsmart the fins were noticably shorter.

Is this actually an accurate way to determine species at a young age or do the fins lengthen with age for these species? any other ways to determine accuratly species at a young age?

I don't remember all the markings at any age but terrors have the outermost tail edge orange, acaras have no color. The blue on the acara face creates a "smile", lines angled up toward the eyes from the mouth corners. Terror tails are more elongated oval shaped than acaras...it's been a while.

Yup. Blue Acaras don't have an orange perimeter around their tails.
