Ever since Blackberry updated software to allow streaming audio and video I have been trying out internet radio services. I have found one that you music lovers should try out.
www.slacker.com (on my berry now so can't do a link). It's free and can be used on your PC, Mac, blackberry, and iPhone. There's the usual list of top 40 stations, techno, hip-hop etc. But there's a lot of features that aren't on others.
One is the ability to create stations, simply by typing in the name of a band the server will create a custom station based on that band. For example, when I typed in The Pogues, the station created with songs by them, bands that influenced them, bands they influenced, other irish punk bands, and even Elvis Costello who produced several of their albums. You can also ban artist from appearing on your stations, or favorite them so they appear more.
Limited commercials, after about 6 or 7 songs, you'll hear a 10 second "this is Slacker radio" ad. Other free radios often have much longer annoying commercials for things like bo-flex or injury claim lawyers.
Ability to skip songs. Others won't let you skip ahead. On the free verison you can skip 6 times in a hour. You still can't play previous tracks.
Menu to access features like artist profile and record reviews. One feature I wish it had would be the ability for the program to email track details so if a new artist came on you could auto email the info in case you wanted to find more by them later.
The best feature, by far, is being able to cache your stations on your blackberry to listen to them with out the buffering or when you don't have service. You just simply plug your phone to your pc and click an .exe file and it will download your selected stations on to your MicroSD card. I have a 16gig card, I think about 14g's are my mp3s and photos, and the program will let me cache 26 stations.I still haven't found out how many songs are saved on a station, I haven't hit the end of any my stations yet.
You can also subscribe to the service for 5 bucks a month for ad free and unlimited skips. I also believe more features too, but not sure, I perfer free over fee.
Enjoy,
Jason
