Eheim Canister Filter Media

I have a 2231 Eheim canister and was wondering if anyone with an Eheim canister has used non-Eheim filter media to replace the Ehfisubstrat and Ehfimech? I ask because Eheim products cannot be purchased in my city. I was thinking of using some of the Hagen filter media which seems almost identical. Any thoughts on this...:confused:

I run almost all of my Eheim filters in bio-only mode. I prefilter them with a basic cylindrical sponge and pack them with either Ehfimech or bioballs. They work fine in this manner.
