Over the past 2 months I've had 3 Bronze Corys get stuck on an Aqua Clear 110 intake. Two were DOA, but I caught the 3rd one quicky and he's now swimming around in a 10 gallon QT.... I have my doubts that he'll make it, but I'm hoping for the best.

All seemed healthy and were full grown. They were all over a year old and the last one I've had close to 2 years. It's my belief that a healthy fish should be strong enough to not get stuck.... but Corys aren't the best swimmers and the AC 110 is a powerful filter.

Has anyone else had this problem? I was thinking of putting an AC media sponge on the intake of the 110's to help defuse the suction, but I come back to thinking a healthy fish shouldn't get stuck in the first place.

This is in my 180 which is an established tank with 2 AC 110's and a XP3 filter.

Ammonia is 0
Nitrites are 0
Nitrates are 30 ....my tap water contains nitrates and I can't them get below 10.
PH is high around 7.8
I change 100 gallons every 10 days with a full gravel vac and the other residents are in my signature.

All my other fish are healthy. I should add that a pair of Angles took out a 3rd two weeks ago when they were guarding eggs and I haven't see any aggression when there's no eggs with them or any other fish. All the Corys that were stuck didn't seem to have any visable injuries or show any sign of illness.

Has anyone else had a problem like this and if you did, how'd you solve it.

Thanks,

I think putting a sponge over the intake is a good idea. I am surprised that healthy fish would get sucked in -- is it possible they aren't healthy?

Yeah, I guess it's possible, but they aren't showing and signs of illness. I asked them how they feel, but I didn't get an answer. :)

The little buggars, wouldn't it be so much easier if they could just hollar out when they're not feeling good! I really hope that the one you saved today makes it!

hmmm. cories can get fungus, but dont seem to show the external signs of it until its fairly advanced. then they do things like have popeye instead of little patches of fuzz. if they seem listless, it probably wouldnt hurt to try something as a preventative like melafix

I'd put a sponge on the intake, but there's no way healthy cories should be getting trapped by the filter. Perhaps you bought weak stock?

There is no way that they should be getting stuck if they are healthy, I had an AC110 and none of mine ever got stuck to the intake. The only time something gets stuck to the intake I know the fish is sick/getting sick.

He died overnight.

I inspected him closely and still found nothing. Good coloration, no bloat or not skinny, no fungus, bumps or bruises. Nothing unusual.

The 1st one I can dismiss as "just one of those things", the second seamed a little odd and this one has me worried.

I do have a bunch of new additions because I upgraded to a 180, but all additions were quarantined and I haven't had a problem with any them.

We moved in November and I wonder if the different water is starting to take a toll on my old fish, although I doubt it.

I had the same problem with some sawbwa resplendens when I first got them. They were healthy, but I lost 2 or 3 stuck to the filter intake (AC 50). So I did what all the PPs said, put a piece of foam on the intake, and problem solved ! Good luck.
