They look just like some swords I just got....they were called "Chain Swords" in the LFS, and they ARE really neat plants. I think the things you're talking about coming out of the top are new plants. At least that's what mine turned in to. They also reproduce via runners that come out at the substrate level. The ones I have do better in low light. I've looked for small size swords for a while and these are just what I wanted.

The wheat things are flower pods. The plants were grown emersed. Eventually the leaves you have now will turn yellow and die off. They will be replaced by a different shaped leaf. The runners look almost the same as the flower pods but they come out of the side. Also you could separate the plants with tweezers and plant them over a larger area.

I'm assuming these came in a pot. Did you remove the rock wool?
