Snail Jello is NOT just for snails! Thanks msjinkzd.
I really thought you guys were nuts for actually making food for your snails -- but I succumbed and gave it a shot because I was worried about the few snails I have. I just use crushed Tums for calcium.
The apple snail likes it but the even more wonderful thing is that my very finicky cardinal tetras pick at it! I barely see them eat flakes because they hide when I approach the tank and the flakes hit bottom before they show up. I can only assume that they have taken on the personalities of the corycats and scavenge the bottom for flakes when I'm gone, because their colors look beautiful and they're nice and plump. So they must be eating something. But it's just such a relief to see them go for the snail jello! So I made a second batch super-packed with Ken's Super Tropical Flakes -- a way for me to ensure the tetras are getting fed! Oh and Corycats eat it, too.
And in the new Betta tank, the Betta loves the snail jello (a little too much actually)! He has had the baby peas one -- a much easier way for me to ensure he gets his required dose of peas . I do have a slight problem because he is eating way too much as evidenced by a nice roundness of the belly. I usually drop the jello in for the snails during the day when the lights are on. I'm wondering if I should drop the jello in at night after lights off and see if Freddy leaves the jello alone for the snails.
Here is a photo Freddy in the feeding dish going for the jello. I apologize for the photo quality -- all my photos are just taken with my iPhone.
