I have had bad experiances with my crayfish clawing my tank inhabitants. Would it harm my crayfish if I put rubberbands on his claws? That way I can get him in the same tank as the others without having to keep him in an increbibly small tank. Sorry the picture is bad, I will try to find a better one. But that is my crayfish.

I personally would never do that

But see that tank he is in now, it is a 5 gallon. I thought then I could keep him in a much bigger tank.

How would he eat? They use their claws to pick up their food. You would starve them to death.

I wouldn't just because the natural resting state for the claws is in a semi-open position. Keeping the rubberbands on long-term may cause damage or distress to the crayfish (it may not, too, I've never done it). At the very least, it'd be a better solution than de-thumbing or claw removal that a lot of people seem to like to do, meh.

Personally, I think the best solution is find an appropriately sized tank for the crayfish to live by itself. But if not possible, just provide a heck of a lot of rock work, plant cover, etc to make it easier for the other tankmates to hide/avoid/etc. And keep the crayfish well fed and just have it in the back of your mind that eventually someone might disappear in your tank. :(

They use the first 2 sets of walking legs more often for picking up food, they usually use the claws for fighting, defense or attempting to catch/hold onto prey (if its a species that likes to hunt). They can also use the maxillipeds (the 3rd set).
