I bought hornwort few weeks ago and it seems my balas like the taste it as well as the black moor. So i doubt it will look pretty in 30 days, already looks worse than when I first got it. Iv been wanting to try live plants so my other 2 options are java moss and jave fern. petland has this big java fern for 25$ but it would be pointless if they would munch on it. people say they leave java moss alone, while others say no. Just doomed or do I just need ALOT or hornwort to start with or wrap them in vinyl screen for a while until they get alot of growth?
Java ferns may be shredded. It's possible but other than that, they are devoid of palatability so most fish actually don't eat them and avoid them completely.

Maybe you could find a smaller plant to try.
$25 seems like an awful lot.
I bet you could do better from the classifieds on this site.
If you get it cheap, it won't hurt as much if something bad happens to it.

Well petsmart has a small shaggy looking piece of java fern for $4, while petland/ebay have big mats of this stuff. In my mind if it was big enough they may leave it alone and it would have a fighting chance, where as small it may get picked on more. I guess thats what I could do though, buy a small java fern and wait 80 years for it to grow huge if it survives.

I agree with the idea of starting with a small to medium fern just to see if they find it distasteful after a short while, for the sake of not wasting money, and if they decide that it isn't food THEN buy yourself the nice big one if you like, but it would stink to get the big one and have them destroy it by the time they figure out that it's not candy.
