Does it work ? I am experiencing a rather severe ich problem in my 20 gallon :headshake2: its well stocked . I used the tank buddies last night changed 50% of the water today and re dosed. Anyone had luck with these ? If you have used it would you use it again ??

Thanks fellas and ladies ,

Give the gravel a good vac every time you redose. If the tank is overstocked the Ick might just keep coming back.
Yeah I agree. I gravel vac every water change so well see how this works. Has anyone used the ich clear tablets ????

Let me give you my very recent experience with Ich. I started out with using the exact medication you mentioned. It made my water cloudy and didn't really seem to work very well and I had to do water changes.

I then next tried an aquarium pharm powder for ich that also didn't work very well. These two meds seemed to reduce the ich but not get rid of it.

Finally I did what I had read about but didn't really believe. I bought some very cheap freshwater aquarium salt. I put one tablespoon per 5 gallons. I also raised the temp in my tank to 82F+. This method killed the ich very quickly. Within 3 days I had no more ich. The salt doesn't have to be redone and from there you can do regular water changes which gradually removes it.

Only thing would stop me from using salt again would be if you have live plants. I dont think most live plants respond well to salt treatment.

The viability of salt treatment depends on what kind of fish. Some fish are too irritated by salt treatment. Ich is a parasite that lurks not only on the fish, but in the fish (gills), and in the environment. So if the gravel isn't stirred up really well during treatment, the ich can hide in the gravel and survive. I have never used the heat and salt treatment, but I have used Tank Buddies. It's always worked for me.

I would think that raising your temperature would help, even if you don't use salt. Keep the heat up for two weeks. Raising the temperature is a good move for many ailments (for some, it worsens though). I don't know if you could mix meds with salt, probably not. If you use salt, don't add it directly in the tank; dissolve it in water first and then add in that water ie a water change with salt in the new water :) When you do water changes, you do have to add in salt again. (Make sure it's not marine salt, just aquarium salt.)

Anyways, I like tank buddies, although depending on your fish you may be able to do salt instead. I think raising your temperature is a good idea (I think it speeds the life cycle of the ich so all phases get hit with meds quickly?), but make sure with heat or heat+salt, to do it for 2 weeks even if the ich disappears (it isn't visible in all phases of life). Anddd follow the jungle directions if you use that.

ahh sorry so long-winded and messy... it's late... going to bed haha

if your going to do salt treatments-- plain ole table salt is much more effective than aquarium salt

good point, I've heard that. Don't you have to make sure you get the "right" salt? Iodized..or kosher...or.. etc...?? (I don't know which, myself)

I will be using aquarium salt and heat from here on. I really appreciate all your feedback everyone thank you very much! :)
