Just west of Saratoga Springs, NY
I put a clown pleco in my Amazon tank a few weeks ago. He was around and didn't move much for a week - just clung to the driftwood. And then he was out and about and seemed fine after his adjustment period. Then I didn't see him. I figured he found a place to hide that I just couldn't see, so I look every day to find him, and nothing. It's been a good week now since I've seen him. He's just not there!! At least as far as I've been able to tell! I tried searching for him behind the driftwood with my plant tongs, to see if he'd dislodge and swim to some other haven, but no such luck. There's no place at the top that he could have gotten out at. The only opening is where the filter is, and that's JUST big enough for the water to come into it.

So where oh where can my pleco be? I use Eco-Complete - is it possible he's buried himself somewhere in that, since it's a fairly fine substrate? And if, gods forbid, he's dead, (there's no sign of that in my ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates, though), where would his body be? I should be able to find him, yes? I've got a prefilter sponge on the intake, so he couldn't have gotten sucked up to, or into, the filter, even in bits and pieces. :eek3:

They are VERY good at hiding. Some people have even had them stay in decor when it was removed from the tank. I would feed at lights out and then wait about 1 hour after the lights are off (to include lights in the room) and go and look with a flashlight.

Clowns are THE ultimate hide and seek champions of the fish world. Beat out flounders I think! In fact, I had one just yesterday stick to a piece of driftwood that I took out, and never saw him on, By pure CHANCE, he fell in to my hand as I was trying to keep the wood from dripping water every where. Talk about a pissed off customer. he was croaking like you wouldn't believe. I put him back in his tank and he quickly swam back behind the plants and just stared at me.. you could tell he was PISSED! lol

I found him. Long dead under the heater, which is horizontal and down low near the substrate. I lifted it up an inch or so, so in case he got back there and got burned and couldn't get out, it can't happen to another one, if I get a new pleco. I did some pruning today, so it was a little easier to see in and around things.

RIP, Bozo!

I guess I've got me some darn good bacteria, 'cuz there wasn't so much as a quarter point spike in the ammonia or nitrites!!
