Hi, I'm in the process of doing a fishless cycle on my 10 gallon quarantine tank.
First I'd like to give a bit of background:
Startup was on Oct 30
Set up 10 gal with filter, a few decorations etc...
Ammonia source is household clear ammonia
No seeding from a healthy tank
Temp is 84
PH is 7.6
I added enough ammonia to bring my readings to approx 5ppm on day one. Since then I've been testing for ammonia and nitrite every other day. I haven't added more ammonia since the first day because levels have remained the same. I'm just starting to see nitrites (0.1 ppm) registering on my test kit and undetectable changes in ammonia so far. It appears all is well so far.
My question is, when do I start adding half of the ammonia? I read up on this on the net but I am still a bit confused...
Is it when I start seeing nitrites? (which is the case now, but ammonia is still at approx 5ppm, so adding 1/2 would be overdosing right?) Or is it when my nitrite spikes?
Thanks in advance.
