18" 96W quad (X2) for planted 75?

We have a simple 45long fish-only. When the ballast finally died in our 7 year old compact fluorescent fixture, we finally got motivated to move up. Picked up a used 75 for $50, stand for another $50, and now are madly researching planted tank forums (and joined AC :)

To replace the ballast that died and the bulbs it took with it would cost more than retrofitting to a setup that will support a planted tank. I did some research and ran across this:

Two of these will fit nicely in our existing fixture. I know they include actinic bulbs, but I'll talk to the folks at Pet Mountain and see if they will swap bulbs or figure we can swap out at our lfs for a couple $$.

For $157 (including the 10% discount and the free shipping!) I think I can get a good basic starter light setup. I know it's not perfect, but I'm looking for input from you guys!

I would rather get the ahsupply lights. They (as far as reflector) are more efficient than most retrofit kits out there.

I saw ahsupply but don't know much about them. The only reason I didn't really go any farther with them is the additional $75-$80 in bulbs as theirs are not supplied with the kits.

The difference their reflectors make the extra $ is worth it. Best to do it right the first time and get great results than get something thats a few bucks less and perhaps regret it later.
But i agree 96w bulbs are pricey..

Another option is going with a catalina fixture for $170

this will really give you great results in a planted tank.

I read a little more on ah supply's website. It really looks like they offer a quality product.

also check out Nova Extreme fixtures on Drfosters site.
Look for fixtures that have individual reflectors on each bulb. Also as ahsupply points out, the shape of the reflector makes a difference.
