Hi all .
bout 6 weeks ago i put some dead rock ( that has been outta water for maybe bout a year or more ) , in my new tank , ( there s nothin except these dead rox in it ) , after a few days ( a week or so ) it starts to smell really bad , and a few days later the smell gone completely ,...
it s bout 6 weeks now and i don see any changes in color and nothin growin or comin outta the dead rocks , ( maybe i m wrong but the water seems abit yellow , just that ) is it normal ? and how much longer it will take to make these things back to life ? anything i can do to make the progress faster ?

( if it helps the tank is not even cycled , i was goin to cycle it with these dead rocks , and the sump is runnin also ,with ceramic rings and activated carbon in it )
thanks all

Dead rock can take anywhere up to around 6 months to become fully live again..I would not expect to see much change for a few months on it at least..

You wont be able to cycle the tank with dead rock, you will need to provide an ammonia source like a raw shrimp or pure ammonia..

ok , thanks for reply , so i ll go for the raw shrimp method to cycle the tank , here two more Qs :
1- will it help the dead rox if i add some live rock ?
2- after the tank cycled can i add fish to it before the dead rock become alive ?

1 - It certainly wil help, yes, as life will be transfered from the live rock to the dead rock, boosting the seeding process..

2 - Yes, you can add fish once the cycle if done..Provided you have some means of filter on the tank that is added before the cycle is started..as the dead rock wont be providing you will any filtration..so, an external filter of sorts will need to be used..

ok, thanks for reply .
i ll go with raw shrimp today , and will add some fish after cyclin , i already have a 10g sump runing ( my tank is 20g ) , i donno what to do with it when the rocks become alive , any use if i keep the sump running after that ?

Of course... you can never have enough filtration

put some additional liverock in the sump as well IMO

i think i will , lets see if i can find some with good price , to help the dead rocks and put some in the sump ...

When I cured my 20 lbs of live rock I also added an additional 20 lbs of dead rock. It's been about 7 months and the dead rock is fully live and has all the goodies my live rock came with. Copepods, sponges, feather dusters, etc.

wow 7 month ? that s long ...
