I wish I knew. I bought some hornwort from one place, then some Red Foxtail (Myriopyhllum heterophyllum) and Silvermist Foxtail (Mayaca fluviatilis) from another. Couldn't hardly tell them apart. I'm not sure I actually got what I ordered and haven't bothered to get any of them again. They're supposed to be quite different, but I couldn't tell any difference.

Probably depends on where you are, but I have heard both names referring to the same plant. I float it in one of my high light tanks. It grows about an inch or so per day. My LFS isn't interested in acquiring more so I wind up tossing a bunch every few weeks.

I found hornwort to be a lot stiffer texture and of a smaller diameter then the foxtail I had after they were established. I got rid of my hornwort in favor of pennywort, but its a real weed.

plantgeek.com has Myriophyllum pinnatum for "green foxtail" and in addition lists Myriophyllum simulans as "frill foxtail"

a quick google search for Myriophyllim aquaticum comes up with another common name, parrot feather.

A more common name for foxtail is (water)milfoil as well.

proof that common names are far too confusing....

Thanks for your replies guys
- I was asking because I noticed that pictures of hornwort looks exactly like some 'foxtail' I bought by mail order.
It's true that those common names are confusing!
The plant I have grew really fast at first, and I suspect is a bit of a nutrient hog.
I'll see if i can identify it based on the info you have all provided.

Most of the plants mentioned are in fact nutrient hogs, and are able to grow and spread quickly. Myriophyllum spicatum specifically is a concern in North American aquatic ecosystems because of it's ability to spread through areas with little plant growth and crowd out natives...
