about how long would it take for stem plants to start growing roots? i know everything probably depends on ferts lights substrate etc...but a ballpark is what i am wondering about

You should definitely see some roots starting to grow within a couple weeks. Depends on the plant, too. When I was growing Hydrocotyle Leucocephala with good light and Co2, I would periodically trim some of the roots and they would be long and strong again within a week, but that is a quick growing plant to begin with.

i get growth in lest then two days but thats with high light, CO2 and fertz. i would say for a low tech tank you might get them in a week though and it really does mater on youre tank and what type of stem plant.

When I first get stem plants, or any plant for that matter, they usually take awhile to settle into the tank. It can take them upwards of 2 weeks before the roots start growing. But, I had some established rotala I cut and within 4 or 5 days they had put down a strong root system, enough to keep them anchored even though the stems were actually above the substrate. That was in a tank with medium/high lighting, co2, ferts.

It will take longer to get a substantial root structure, but I would agree with the time frame of "within a few weeks" initial growth. It really depends on a lot of things...the plant itself, your setup, the condition of the plant, etc.

i relocated some of the stems yesterday to make some things look a bit better and i noticed some roots forming near the base of the stem. it almost looked like runners that i have seen on dwarf sag. does that sound right?
Less than 24 hours for me with Heternanthera zosterifolia and 2 days for Egeria densa. Can't remember about the other stem plants I tried.
