Wasn't sure where to post this one so, I'll go with General...

I noticed my brother has two black arrowanas whose right eyes look down at all times. Is this a normal thing for Arrowanas to do? And if so, how can you treat it?

Okay I think the most important question is what kind of substrate (sand, gravel....) does he have in the tank? It is very common for arowana to develop this "droopy-eye syndrome", I have had some that came across it as well. The leading reason for this is actually the reflection of the fish in the glass (on the bottom of the tank). If there is nothing on the bottom of your tank, the arowana will look at themselves (quite vain, no?) and this will cause their eyes to point downwards. It is not necessarily BAD for this to occur, but it is no doubt unnatural and you should try to get something on the bottom. I have not kept many black arowana, but if you dont have anything on the base now I would suggest using very fine sand. No gravel or rocks, this can really injure them. As far as going back to normal is concerned, I have heard of the syndrome being remedied with a change in the substrate but it is sometimes permanent. Please update me on this, and if there is anything else I am pretty experienced with these fish so please ask...

He has very fine sand on the bottom of the tank. There are other fish present that tend to swim under the Arrowanas, since they tend to swim at the surface.

I noticed he had three small toy basketballs floating in the water. He just told me that was to draw the attention of the Arrowanas, in hopes they would work on bringing that droopy eye back up.

Thanks for the info!

most arowanas will get this, esp the southamerican ones. does he have a canopy? mine developed after i moved him and put a canopy on top since i dont use a light with him i guess he didnt want to stare at darkness anymore plus the top of his tank is about 5' 5" or so so hes looking down at the dog or something. its nothing bad except i think its ugly. guess it shows that arowanas should be kept in the wild. it could also come from fatty tissue behind the eye from bad feeding habits. in asia they would sometimes perform sugery kind of like doing liposuction to ge tthe fat out.

its because their diet is too high in protein, im guessing he feeds pretty much exclusivly feeders right?

Im pretty sure there is nothing you can do about it now but double check with the fellas at www.predatoryfish.net alot of them own or have extensive experience with arrowanas.

bah, I just realized I was thinking of Popeye however still try Pfish alot of the guys there have arrowanas.
