This is the first time I've used a quarantine tank in all the years I've kept fish. I don't know why it has taken so long but I'm finally commited. I added 12 pristellas and 3 cory cats all of which seem very healthy so far. It is extremely difficult to pic out any problems w/ the pristellas because there are so many and they move very quickly. I wanted to know if some of you just do a general parisite medication in your quarantine tank when you are adding a new school, or just keep them in quarantine and if no problems arrise assume they are clean. Thanks for your input.

I assess each situation and species as it comes. I always treat bottom dwellers, mostly loaches, for internal parasites while in the Q-tank and before they go in the main tank. If there's any inkling or even just a feeling I will treat for ich and maybe even a dose of antibiotics, but usually just the levamisole and praziquatal for internal parasites. At least 4 weeks of good health before they go in the main tank.

I think if you just keep them in quarantine for a month or so, you should be able to know for sure whether they're healthy or not. No need for meds unless you have a real problem that can't be treated with regular water changes.

30 days on close watch. If they show any signs of illness that 30 days starts over once they are treated fully. I failed to quarantine a new cichlid in my 55 and murphy's law he introduced ich. Live and learn

parasites may not show up in the 4 week period.
they may actually not appear for some time.

I mostly keep Angels and Discus and consider the source to determine the action I take.
but in General I treat for internal parasites as a precaution.

again.. if the source is reputable you may be fine just keeping an eye on the fish.

That's good advice star.
I'd recommend a good quality anti-parasite fish food. Its easy and you dont have to worry. Its worth the piece of mind.

Today one of the cory's was stuck to the intake of the hot magnum. I don't know if he just screwed up or was weak and got pulled into it. It is now injured so I should probably get rid of it. Money up the intake.
