i just got a 55 gallon salt tank
that died 3 years ago
it still had all the coral and substrate in it
no water
should i throw everything out and start over
or can i use some of the old coral as base

If it's crushed coral, I'd dump it. People like finer sandbeds now.

It is your personal preference, if you want to take the time, you can rinse it all out and clean the tank. I think it should be fine. As for a base, i am sure you can use the old coral too. What are you planning on doing with the tank? Any ideas yet?

Have you ever dosed with copper while that crushed coral was being used? If so, I would probably start over if you are going to keep inverts. As cheap as you can get sand, I would just start over anyway.
