Trying to plan out my 29g (cause getting the fish I want will be a slow, painful process here).

What small non-shellie fish can fit, but are still Tang fish? Or is that a hopeless cause, wanted to stay biotope as much as possible.

What are you planning on having so far?

on this site in the fresh water species, cichlids, african section of information there is a link to a chart that has compatabilities for the different lake fish

the genuses copadichromis and cyprichromis based on that chart are your only safe options

Well, there are two species that come to mind, both from Lake Tanganyika. A 29 gallon may be a bit small for them (a 55g would be better), but it might work.

The first is the Tanganyikan killiefish, Lampricthys tanganyicanus. The second is a schooling cichlid, Cyprichromis leptosoma. Look 'em up and see what you think.

If they won't work for you, the Celebes rainbow fish is a bit smaller and can tolerate the water conditions you will be maintaining in your tank.

Good luck.

Heh here comes the 'overstocking' yells... although I could do just one group... plan is to actually have a second tier in the tank for 2 levels to offer a little more floor space, but we'll see.

4 Lamprologus ocellatus
4 Neolamprologus caudopunctatus

just wanted a mid-top/dither in there.

The killies would be ok in a 29 but the cyps wouldn't have enough room.
