I have my fish tanks in the basement, my computer is also there. Alot of times I keep the music playing on the mp3 player and I have a pretty good sound system on the computer so it can get pretty loud sometimes. The fish don't seem to react to it at all though.. does anyone know if this stressful for them?

If they don't react, it's not too loud. If I crank the stereo, all the fish in all the tanks hide.

The husbands music room is on the other side of the wall housing my discus tank- when he practices acoustic drums the music he plays along with is very loud. Power rock/metal 900 'giga' watts of loud.
I watch the discus during his practices and they never react at all.
Surprised me too.

It only seems to bother my fish when I am listening to illegally downloaded MP3s. LOL:)

Which reminds me to ask if they can smell as well as hear music? My fish seem to go nuts when I'm eating Chinese takeout.
I didn't know that anyone or anything could smell music.:D

Maybe they smell sweet and sour "friends and relatives"?? LOL.
Fish cannot "smell" terrestial odors and cannot "hear" per-say. They can feel the vibration through the water though.

Music can stress fish out. Depends on how loud, the bass, stuff like that. But it can stress them out, just be careful.

My Oscar attacks the metal thermometer in the tank whenever we eat in front of him

I will never have Chinese Algae Eaters due to this posting on the rude interuption while eating Chinese take-out. It's just not right! Just another reason to get "true" SAE's instead!
About music...
I think some 'bass' sounds could be enjoyed by fish. They would think a nice thunderstorm is moving in. I wish I had saved an article on this.. The article said they proved the fish were more active when low pithched sounds were played on the boat. I need to test this when there aren't many other fishers around -
most fishing is normally done quietly.. :)

I can see where a loud, sudden, harsh bass sound would startle the fish, but a rumbling may actually stimulate them.... At least it seems possible, and from what I have read - is possible.

what if you turn it up so loud that everything in the room is all blurry?
Ive only ever done it once, but that's not to say it won't happen again:D :D

Imagine what might happen if you're eating Shrimp Chow Mein while blasting the bass music? I shudder at the thought
