I probably wouldn't use a 50 watt in a three gallon--if it ever did stick on, it will boil the tank. Finding a quality heater for a 3 gallon is tough, I know. I would look for something closer to 20-25 watts. Still overkill, but not by as much. Figure you want 3 watts per gallon, which means that 50 watt one is 40 watts too much--yikes!

OG, why would it boil the tank? It would obviously heat it quickly, but I don't think it would be a problem, especially if it's placed near the filter intake.

If it failed and stuck on, it could overheat the tank. Actual boiling is unlikely, but it would be too warm for the vast majority of fish, and it would get there very fast. I don't trust heaters--I prefer two too small heaters than one oversized one.

Remember, it's a tronic, one of the two best heaters on the market. The odds of it failing are very very slim. I agree with the two smaller heaters as thats what I do, but I think he should be fine for the time being. Then, when jared sees a 25 watt one, he can pick it up and keep the tronic as a spare.
