i am trying to identify this egg sack type thing growing on one of my plants. Sorry the image is so large it is so that you can see it better

i am thinking it is otto eggs because the only fish in my tank are:
ottos
platties - live bearers
harlequin rasboras
neon tetras

NOTE: the picture is huge.

Thanks!

do you have any snails in the tank? That would be my guess, never seen fish that lay eggs in a "sac" like that.

snail eggs/snails are often smuggled in on new plants....

hmmm...i guess ill have to contact the persons who i got the plants from recently to find out what type of snails i have!

it has been about 3 weeks since i got these platns in my tank. could i really have not seen one yet?

how long do i have til they hatch or whatever, i think i am going to put them in a bucket and see what happens

Drop a Algae wafer or something for a bottom feeder about 1 hour before the lights go out. check on it 3 hours later and you should see snails.

Drop a slice of Cucumber or Zucchini in the tank should get the same results. I think your suppose to blanch them in boiling water first to soften them up.

I dropped a slice of raw cucumber in my tank the other day and I was able to count all the snails I had in the tank about 8 hours later.

From what I understand. Snail eggs hatch in 2 or 3 days.
And yes, you should have seen a snail big enough to lay that big of a clump.

I woke up yesterday to see a few clumps here and there on my glass. And also had some egss on a plant I brought in. They were gone in about 3 days.

I do have snails and see them, though. It was intentional for me.

Here's an article I just found on Oto Breeding...

http://www.otocinclus.com/breeding.html

I have seen a tank before, that had cory eggs on the glass. Just like, what snail egss look like.

If you know you Don't have A snail in there.

You might want to start documenting everything. According to that article, this hasn't had much for witnesses. ; )

so far i have found that it could be ramshorn or common pond snails that could have been hitchhikers from someone i bought plants from here.

so i have found that ramshorns are good algae eaters and i have a lot of algae that is not going away unless i do manual scrapings of it. i have also never seen a snail in the tank.

I had brown algae on my 10 gallon tank glass.
After I threw in some snails, the glass was crystal clear after a few days.

They will only nibble on plants a little if you have 30+ baby snails

They are not fish eggs of any kind.

My ramshorns lay eggs where ever they please, even on eachothers shells! LOL

Do you have any rocks or wood in your tank? Lift them up and you'll likely find the bottoms of these areas littered with these eggs. They look like small clear snot balls filled with little eggs (dots).

Get a couple of loaches. You may still have a few snails, but the population will stay in check to the point that you will forget that they are there. When they explode, they'll explode!!

I will have to find my snail hunting hat and then have a go at it tonight once i get home.

getting loaches just to control snails is not a good idea unless you have the room and the desire to have loaches. Also, only certain types of loaches will eat snails. if you over feed, the snail population will explode; if they get to bibilical proportions than you are overfeeding. if you truly feel that they are a pest you can squish them on the glass when you see them, and the fish will eat them up. Or you could bait and discard them....JMO.

LOL! It typically won't take much hunting, but I bet you look stunning in that hat!

Yeah, if you are showing eggs visibly, you likely have a ton somewhere else. They likely arrived on plants and the seller may not even know about it. Some poeple often dip plants in parasite medication to kill off any hitch hikers.

Best wishes!

Noodles,

Great point. I should have said Clown Loaches and I also should have mentioned the desire and tank size. I get sloppy sometimes as I deal with tanks no smaller than 100 gallons. Squishing snails on a tank that big would take forever!

Anyway, loaches look great, do a great job of keeping snails controlled and do best in at least pairs. They typically don't have many campatability issues IME.

Thanks for the clarification! Best wishes!

And they like to roll over and play dead(Sleep).
So don't get too hasty grabbing a net to take them out of the tank.

Lucky you! :) I hope my post was not abbrasive, it was not intended to be...loaches are great but some of us (me!) do not have the luxury of tank space to support groups to keep them happy. *sigh* Someday! LOL

(I accidently squished a small ramshorn and my Angel was so pleased with the treat!)

Noodles,

Not abrasive at all!! No worries. I was not being very responsible with that post. Yes, I am lucky in the fact that I have such large tanks. I do have one little shrimp tank, but that's just shrimp and some baby neon tetras. I just get lazy when I think about what others might be dealing with (tank size wise). I thank you for the clarification. I would hate to see someone run out and buy a fish that they cannot reasonably take care of just due to a bad post on here. Thanks again!

Best wishes!

Just pull it off with your fingers. It will stay together very well. It's like jelly.

well i went snail hunting last night. found 4 or 5 very small dark colored snails and only that one eggsac that we identified in the very first post.

i pulled the plant that it was attached to and although when i received it from the buyer it was in perfect condition i managed to kill it so i just dumped the plant in a bucket of water and am going to see if some snails are produced.

i cleaned the tank real well and also did a good vacuum sweep of the ecocomplete to rid it of some fish poo...mission accomplished (for now)
