I've had some questions, so I'll share some of those answers.

By possible trades, let's stick with aquatic items I could use right now. (Don't tempt me with other stuff I shouldn't be spending money on! lol.)

Yes, the other mosses I have will be back too.. later on. I'll post those when they're available again. Will also have moss balls for sale in a few weeks. I'll update the thread as new stuff is ready.

Thanks for the orders and questions, everyone.

Would love some moss balls - What kind of moss are you using and how much will they be?

Hi Lindtball. Moss balls are also called Marimo Balls. They're not really moss and it's not something we make using moss. Marimo Balls are a little odd - it's actually a form of algae that naturally grows into a round sphere. (Don't worry, it's not a bad form of algae.) These balls, then roll around in the current in certain lakes where they're found, thus maintaining their round shape and keeping them green all over. They grow very slowly.. something like a few centimeters in diameter per year.

This photo from myfishtank.net shows what the texture looks like (better than my photos do).

http://www.myfishtank.net/reviews/data/21/1499marimo_balls2-large.jpg

They're undemanding in aquariums.. just squeeze them out every so often to clean out the gunk that collects inside. Make sure you turn them occasionally so they don't fade on the bottom. Many fish will do that for you, like my goldies and loaches. Sometimes when they're pearling, they'll float around too. I get a real kick out of them.. and so do my fish as you'll see in the attached pictures.

Having said all that.... if what you really want is a type of moss that's attached to something instead (not a Marimo Ball), just let me know. You can always buy a loose clump of moss and do this yourself - or I'd be happy to attach some to a round (or flat) stone for you. (Just PM me with the specifics so I know what sizes/shapes you'd like and I'll reply back with a price.) Those are easy to do and I won't charge you anything for the rock. ;)

Here are some of my moss balls. I'm still setting up some new tanks, so I don't know yet how many I'll keep. But I'll post a proper update here with measurements and such, once they're available. Pricing will be based on size.

Goodness, gracious, great balls of...Marimo moss!

Are there any still available?

Kashta
04-02-2009, 8:08 PM
Yes Ryi, indeedy. I'll post an update soon with some new mosses and other things I haven't had to offer before. Just waiting for darkness when the lighting comes out better so I can include some pics too.

Availability now of what's already been posted: Flame Moss, Taiwan Moss, Subwassertang, Java Moss (at a lower cost than the others), and a bit more Weeping Moss... plus the Marimo's are still available too.

Still Available:

Flame Moss, Taiwan Moss, Subwassertang, Java Moss (at a lower cost than the others), and a bit more Weeping Moss... plus the Marimo's are still available too.

Newly added:

Anchor Moss (Vesicularia sp.) - $9.00 per golf ball size portion.
Spiky Moss (Taxiphyllum sp.) - $9.00 per golf ball size portion.
Mini Pellia (Riccardia chamedryfolia) - $10.00 per small portion of 1.5 to 2 inches across.

Anchor Moss - Identified as a distinctly different species (under the same Genus as Taiwan, Flame, and Java Mosses) by Dr. Benito Tan in 2006.

Bioplast fish shop has a new moss. It is of a much lighter shade of green than most of the other aquarium mosses we know. The moss does not have a common name yet but Bioplast thinks an appropriate name would be "Anchor Moss". On some fronds, the branches are almost at right angles to the stem. If you look at just the tips, it's somewhat similar in appearance to a ship's anchor.

http://www.aquaticquotient.com/forum/showpost.php?p=413826&postcount=1

Relatively slow growing compared to most other premium mosses; growth form is flat with horizontal branching. Has slightly larger and longer fronds compared with Taiwan Moss. Easy moss to keep and is most similar to Spiky Moss in appearance. Prefers cooler temps and grows well within a wide pH range (5.0 to 8.0). Well suited for foreground use as a carpet or lawn; given it's texture and ease of care (less trimming needed). Can also be attached to rocks and driftwood using string or fishing line.

Spiky Moss - Faster growing moss that's bright green in color. Makes a striking visual contrast to the darker colored mosses (as in US Fissidens/Phoenix Moss). Easy to grow and tolerates warmer temperatures. Layered, bushy growth form that's nice used in moss walls, as a carpet moss, or attached to driftwood/rocks.

Mini-Pellia - Liverwort commonly known as Mini Pellia or Coral Pellia. Very tiny plants that grow slowly, but are otherwise easy to care for. Prefers cooler water but is not very demanding. This plant sinks naturally and is self-attaching once establshed. Excellent choice for small or nano tanks and makes a great addition to shrimp colonies.

Can't get very clear photos of moss, but maybe these will give you some idea.

Anchor Moss

Spiky Moss

http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=747&pictureid=8368 http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=747&pictureid=8369

Mini Pellia - This is to give you the most clear idea of the portion size, so there's no misunderstanding. Very difficult to find in any quantity.

http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=747&pictureid=8371

And this is to show how far the small portion should spread when you actually attach it somewhere. Despite it's tiny size, this should still be an adequate amount to go on 2 small rocks or 1 larger one. Use fine netting or string, but not tied too tightly.

That's great, Dean. I'm glad you like them!

I always like how dense and soft those moss balls feel. And they're quite heavy... noticed that when I first got mine.

Just wait until you see one moving. I think each one has it's own personality. :perv:

Taiwan Moss and Java Moss ** Sold Out **

Still available: Flame Moss, Subwassertang, Anchor Moss, Spiky Moss, and Mini Pellia.

---------

As an update on the Mini Pellia... I packaged up a portion to ship out tonight and the portion size I've shown before was just too small. That was a match to the first sample of this that I bought myself, but I think it would be too disappointing. So I'm filling the container shown in the pictures a lot higher than what this measured out as before. It pretty much doubles the amount... for the same price.

Here are updated photos to show exactly the portion size you would receive. (One portion is sold and one is pending - so 3 portions remain.)

Update: All plants, mosses, and marimo balls are gone and I don't expect to have more to sell for quite a while. Most of what I had available has already sold locally, through PMs I've received, and to a batch of very resourceful crayfish I've been corresponding with. (Sorry!)
