I've read that stocking a few discus with GBRs is fairly common but I've never seen this first hand. Has anyone had success with them?

I have a 55g tropical set up with 6 neons, 2 rainbows, and 4 corys. There was a pair of Blue Rams in the tank but they have been recently removed to a breeding tank. So I was thinking about adding in a pair of discus and a new pair of rams...yes, no? Any other stocking suggestions?

it is done fairly often as they both have the same requirements.

but remember discus should be kept in schools 5-6 as a minimum. and the water is quite warm at 84 f.

your other fish may not like this much.

Personally I would think you would be close to overstocking a 55.
Discus can get pretty big.

discus should be kept in schools so the 55 would be pretty tight. a pair of rams may be OK though

What species are your cories and rainbows? Take temperature into consideration. Most fish lack tolerance for high end temperature. Neons are one of them.

Thanks for the tips. The rainbows (bosemani) have actually been given to a friend, so we're now down to just the 6 neons, and 4 peppered cories. They have all done well over the last 6 months or so at temps around 81-82 degrees...
Our 55 g is more a display piece and cheap entertainment for our 3 year old that just wants to see "big colorful ones" as he puts it. We want to keep it a quiet community tank though. So any thoughts on something other than discus?
