I'm going to try to breed Amano shrimp and need to start a small half gallon tank of water with no substrate and a Fluval 1 Plus covered in a nylon stocking.

Can I use the water from my planted freshwater tank to make the saltwater mixture?
Would I benefit from using the cycled tank water to start a small saltwater tank?
I was thinking about getting some Seachem Stability also.

I also need to store some salt water in a gallon jug so I can do 15% water changes every 3 or 4 days.

Any suggestions on how I should set this up?

Cash limit is less then $20 and time is a couple weeks to get this going.

what about a 5 gal pale???

Too big and the salt would drive up the cost when only 2 liters of water is needed as they are only small larva

Freshwater and saltwater bacteria are two different strains. That's why when someone converts a tank from fresh to salty, they have to cycle it to get the right kind of bacteria going.

One good way to get ya started would be to go to a lfs that carries salt water, and ask to purchase a small amount of substrate from one of their tanks. That would be the quickest and probably the cheapest way to get your tank started. And get as much water as you can. I have never seen a product that cycles your tank for you. Some may help alittle but none of them do the job they state they do.
