When I did a water change today, I realized that the filter wasn't working! I noticed a couple of fish gasping last night but of course I wondered, "maybe they always breathe that way and I just never noticed".

The spray bar was still sending out some water but you could only tell if you put your finger right up to and even then you could hardly tell that it was working.

My husband took the canister apart, we cleaned the filter in case it was because it was caked with muck (rinsed in aquarium water removed from the tank). He put it all back together and it's working better but it sprays out a lot and then dies down and then sprays out hard for a bit and then slows back down. He's checked all of the connections and they seem fine.

Any advice?

Thanks!

I had some trouble with my XP 2. http://www.aquariumadvice.com/forums/f60/rena-sp2-pumping-bubbles-112243.html (http://www.aquariumadvice.com/forums/f60/rena-sp2-pumping-bubbles-112243.html)

I finally replaced the factory tubing with vinyl tubing from HD. It’s clear and when I looked at the intake tube while it was running,
I could see bubbles. Here is what I did:

Sounds like the motor is failing. Do you have a warranty?

Check for possible suction of air into drainer tube (check all connections) or shake canister gently to expel any air pocket formed. If not above, may be impeller is damaged/dirty.
